















Awaawaroa Bay Ecovillage is a community that was established 25 years ago on a 169-hectare piece of land. The 15 families that live on the land have a share each in the property of which nearly 50 per cent is protected by covenants from future clearing or development.
The land is looked after and farmed organically encouraging bio-diversity while protecting and enhancing the local eco-systems and natural habitats.
An eel sanctuary was established to protect New Zealand’s rare long-finned eel the Tuna Kuwharuwharu.
